Ongoing discussion on our music listserv: what is the best string of four consecutive albums ever released by a single artist? Live albums and compilations may be disregarded. I nominated The Kinks (1965-68): The Kink Kontroversy, Face to Face, Something Else, and The Village Green Preservation Society. Other nominations I found compelling:
- Bob Dylan (1965-67) — Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde, and John Wesley Harding.
- Velvet Underground (1967-70) — The Velvet Underground & Nico, White Light/White Heat, The Velvet Underground, and Loaded.
- Rolling Stones (1968-72) — Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, and Exile on Main Street.
- Al Green (1970-73) — Gets Next to You, Let’s Stay Together, I’m Still in Love with You, and Call Me.
- Stevie Wonder (1972-74) — Music of My Mind, Talking Book, Innervisions, and Fulfillingness’ First Finale.
- Elvis Costello (1977-80) — My Aim Is True, This Year’s Model, Armed Forces, and Get Happy!!.
- The Fall (1979-83) — Dragnet, Grotesque (After the Gramme), Hex Enduction Hour, and Perverted by Language.
- The Replacements(1981-85) — Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash, Hootenanny, Let It Be, and Tim.
